Troubled Teens

You may have given a lot of thought to boot camps.   Teens who are more trouble than their parents can manage have often been sent to this type of institution.  You likely want to do what’s best, but feel you are at your wits end.  It is always a good idea to think about these, and make an informed decision.  It is worth asking if with boot camps, teens have a chance of changing?

Boot camps for teens in the past meant one thing.  A camp structured much like boot training for the army, directed at teens who had issues with violence, disrespect and drink/drug addictions.  The idea would be that the children would enter the camp in a ‘broken’ condition and leave the camp in a ‘fixed’ condition.  This would give the teenagers a chance to avoid further trouble with the law.

The misconception of summer camps, had a stern drill commander screaming at them from dawn to dusk.  As previously outlined, the idea was that they would thus avoid future run-ins with the law.  The reality was that as there was no real support and therapy to assess the cause of their actions, they would play the camp game and return to the same behaviour once out.

The contemporary summer boot camps are entirely different.  Yes, they still are based on the premise of teens with issues moving away from home for a period.  Yes, they do have disciplined routines and principles.  There is however a greater amount of time spent with the teens, working on their deeper issues that led them to behave in this particular way.  There are many different themed camps, directed at different problems.  Some aren’t even a problem as such.  There are religious ones, aimed to strengthen and deepen a teens religious beliefs, run by particular religious groups.  Also, there are ones aimed solely at improving or cementing a teens academic ability.

One of the most popular nowadays, and with good reason, are the weight loss boot camps.  Teens are put through their paces, in a programme of activities and lessons designed to reteach them how to have a healthy lifestyle.  There are normally weight loss targets and powerful counselling designed to set them up for life beyond the camp.  By learning why they overeat, they can correct this and better enable them to change their life course.

Academic boot camps are very interesting.  Often, teens are sent there not because they have a problem, but rather to just give them a booster to continue their success at school and college.  Everything is aimed towards them doing even better.  At the other end of the spectrum, they are designed to help children with a particular weakness academically.  Increasing their knowledge, understanding and also the methods they use to study.

So you shouldn’t feel like you are a bad parent for thinking about summer boot camps.  Teens can benefit from the modern set-up of these dedicated facilities.  They learn a greater appreciation for manners, order and respect.  So as well correcting the main problems, it can help improve other skills.  Bear in mind that every child is different, and your child may not be suited to a camp.  You know your child better than anyone else, thinking about it’s effect on you both will help decide if you offspring should become boot camps teens.
